Today is National Day in China, so I am reposting my thoughts from last year, when I was in China during its huge 60th birthday bash. I spent the day in Qingdao with a student. I watched the Beijing military parade with her and her parents, who were deeply touched with patriotism. There was a lot of grandstanding and metaphorical muscle flexing in the official celebrations, but I can't help but think some of it was justified:
"Best Wishes on Your 60th"
